Mulches:

Mulching beds does more than just make your yard look nice, it actually serves a more important purpose. Mulch helps to prevent weeds, holds in moisture for your plants, and over time will add organic matter to your soil. You should never use fresh wood chips in your plant beds, because as it ages and decomposes it will rob you soil and your palnts of important nutrients. Using a good quality aged mulch is recommended.

Shredded hardwood myulch can be purchased in bags or bulk format, and they can come in a variety of colors or in a natural aged brown. Dyed mulches tend to hold their color longer than the natural mulch and the most popular colors are Red and Black, but Auburn is gaining in popularity. Some bagged mulches such as Scotts Naturescapes mulch is guaranteed to hold it's color for at least 1 year. If it doesn't, you can call Scotts for a refund - just make sure you hold on to your receipt as it will be required to receive a refund or replacement.

Bulk mulches on the other hand, are not guaranteed to hold their color for any length of time, but they are quite a bit less expensive than buying bagged mulch should you need more than 1 yard. Aged shredded hardwood mulch is treated with an environmentally friendly dye that will not harm plants or animals, but may stain driveways or other hard surfaces, so make sure you use a tarp under your mulch while storing it on your driveway. Dyed mulch needs to set in the sun for approximately 6-24 hours before the color becomes permanent. If you should spread your dyed mulch and it rains heavily prior to the color becoming set you may notice some of the surface mulch that looks lighter than it was prior to the rain. All you need to do is rake up the surface mulch that looks lighter so that the darker mulch underneath is now on top. Once this is sun dried the color will be set.
